Nellikai (Amla / Indian Gooseberry) — one of nature’s most extraordinary sources of Vitamin C and Ayurveda’s most complete Rasayana herb, freshly milled from Emblica officinalis. Contains up to 20× more bioavailable Vitamin C than orange, heat-stable and proven across millennia of use.

How to Use

Mix one teaspoon in a glass of warm water and drink once daily, preferably in the morning. Can also be taken with honey, stirred into warm water with a pinch of turmeric, or blended into smoothies. For hair, mix with coconut oil and apply to the scalp before washing. Its sour, astringent taste is characteristic and indicates its high Vitamin C content.

Description

Nellikai Powder (Amalaki)  Emblica officinalis | Vitamin C, Immunity & Rejuvenation

In the classical texts of both Siddha and Ayurvedic medicine, Nellikai — known across India as Amla — holds a position of supreme importance. It is one of the three fruits in the celebrated Triphala formula, and the one to which Ayurveda attributes the most extensive therapeutic range. The reason is partly botanical: Emblica officinalis is one of the richest natural sources of Vitamin C on earth — and more importantly, its Vitamin C exists in a heat-stable, bioavailable form that survives cooking, drying, and processing far better than synthetic ascorbic acid or the Vitamin C in most other fruits.

In Tamil Nadu, Nellikai is part of everyday life — eaten fresh, pickled, dried, and powdered. The intuitive Tamil wisdom that eating Nellikai prevents illness and maintains vitality turns out to be one of the most evidence-supported claims in traditional nutrition. Our Nellikai Powder is milled from the dried fruit of Emblica officinalis, sourced from Tamil Nadu and processed at our GMP-certified facility in Pollachi.

What the Ancient Texts Say

The Charaka Samhita (Chikitsasthana 1.3) declares Amalaki (Nellikai) as the best of all Rasayana herbs, stating: “Amalaki is the best among rejuvenating herbs.” The Ashtanga Hridayam (Sutrasthana 6) prescribes it as the foremost tonic for all tissues (dhatus), specifically recommending it for eye health, hair growth, skin clarity, and intelligence. The Siddha text Gunapadam (Mooligai Vaguppu) classifies Nellikai as a tridoshic herb with sour, astringent, pungent, bitter, and sweet tastes — all five tastes except salt — a characteristic associated in Siddha theory with the most comprehensive healing plants. The Sushruta Samhita recommends Amalaki for twelve different disease categories, more than almost any other single herb in the text.

What Modern Research Shows

A study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2011) confirmed that the Vitamin C in Emblica officinalis has significantly higher bioavailability and stability than synthetic ascorbic acid, attributed to its binding with tannins that protect it from oxidation. Research in the Journal of Medicinal Food documented significant cholesterol-lowering activity in human subjects — a randomised controlled trial showing meaningful reductions in LDL and total cholesterol. A study in Phytomedicine confirmed potent hepatoprotective effects comparable to silymarin. Research published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2005) documented anti-tumour and immunomodulatory properties attributed to the plant’s ellagitannin content. A systematic review in Food & Function (2020) covering 36 studies confirmed broad anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and cardioprotective activity.

Key Benefits

  • Vitamin C powerhouse: Up to 20× more bioavailable Vitamin C than orange; heat-stable tannin-bound form with superior stability compared to synthetic ascorbic acid
  • Immune system support: Comprehensive immunomodulatory activity documented across multiple studies; classified as primary immune tonic in both Siddha and Ayurveda
  • Hair growth and anti-greying: Classical Charaka and Ashtanga Hridayam prescription for kesha vardhana (hair growth) and prevention of premature greying; used as scalp oil ingredient
  • Cholesterol management: Randomised controlled trial evidence for significant reduction in LDL and total cholesterol in human subjects
  • Skin radiance: Vitamin C and ellagitannin content supports collagen synthesis and inhibits melanin formation — brightening and firming the skin from within
  • Liver protection: Hepatoprotective activity comparable to silymarin — one of the most potent plant-based liver tonics identified in research
  • Supreme Rasayana: Described as the “best of all rejuvenating herbs” in the Charaka Samhita — the ultimate endorsement in classical Ayurvedic literature
