The Charaka Samhita (Chikitsasthana 1.3) declares Amalaki (Nellikai) as the best of all Rasayana herbs, stating: “Amalaki is the best among rejuvenating herbs.” The Ashtanga Hridayam (Sutrasthana 6) prescribes it as the foremost tonic for all tissues (dhatus), specifically recommending it for eye health, hair growth, skin clarity, and intelligence. The Siddha text Gunapadam (Mooligai Vaguppu) classifies Nellikai as a tridoshic herb with sour, astringent, pungent, bitter, and sweet tastes — all five tastes except salt — a characteristic associated in Siddha theory with the most comprehensive healing plants. The Sushruta Samhita recommends Amalaki for twelve different disease categories, more than almost any other single herb in the text.
