What is it
Chitharathai (சிற்றரத்தை) is the small, reddish-brown, fiercely aromatic rhizome of Alpinia officinarum — a cousin of ginger that the Siddha tradition has kept close for centuries. In Tamil it is Chitharathai or Sitharathai; in Hindi, Kulinjan; in English, Lesser Galangal. Where ginger is bright and hot, Chitharathai is deeper and rounder — pine and pepper and a faint sweetness underneath, the kind of aroma that fills a kitchen the moment the rhizome is broken.
Siddha practice classes it among the warming, kapham-reducing aromatics: the herb you reach for when the weather turns damp, when the chest feels heavy, when the throat wants something more than plain hot water. The Ayurvedic nighantus record it as Kulanjana, grouped with the fragrant drugs and described as kanthya — favouring the throat — and svarya, favouring the voice. Singers and speakers across the South have known that entry for a very long time.
We have put whole pieces of the rhizome into a tea bag, because that is closest to how it was always taken: broken, boiled, and drunk warm.

What Makes This Different
It is actually the right species. Most products sold as “galangal” are Alpinia galanga — Perarathai, greater galangal, the large culinary rhizome of Thai cooking. Chitharathai is Alpinia officinarum, the smaller, more aromatic lesser galangal, and it is the one Siddha and Ayurvedic texts name for throat and respiratory use. The two are not interchangeable, and we do not treat them as if they were.
Whole rhizome, not rhizome dust. Chitharathai is hard and woody, which makes it easy to grind into a fine powder that fills a bag cheaply and gives up its aroma to the air long before it reaches your cup. Ours is cut into whole pieces, sun-dried, and bagged in that form. It looks like a rhizome when you open the sachet, because it is one.
Single-origin, single-ingredient. No flavouring, no colour, no filler leaf bulking out the bag, no added “natural essence” to compensate for weak material. Chitharathai has never needed help smelling like itself.

What It Does
- Siddha holds it as a warming, throat-friendly aromatic. Through the damp months it was taken as a kudineer — a simple boiled preparation — for throat comfort and easy, unhurried breathing. The classical Kulanjana entry sits it among the fragrant drugs, described as favouring both throat and voice.
- It carries the warmth that made it a digestive herb. The Siddhars used it where the stomach felt cold, heavy or slow after eating. A 2024 species-specific review in Frontiers in Pharmacology gathers the modern laboratory and animal work on the rhizome, including studies examining gastrointestinal function — preclinical work, but consistently pointed at the same territory tradition marked out.
- The rhizome is measurably rich in plant phenolics. In laboratory testing, rhizome extracts showed concentration-dependent free-radical scavenging, with the hot-macerated extract measuring roughly 50 mg/g total phenols and 54 mg/g flavonols. The same in-vitro study recorded activity against several common laboratory bacteria. All of it in glassware, not in people — but it tells you what is in the rhizome.
- Its aroma is not an accident of taste. GC-MS profiling of Alpinia officinarum essential oil found eucalyptol as the single largest volatile component — the same aromatic compound family that gives eucalyptus its character — followed by α-terpineol and β-sesquiphellandrene. That cool, resinous top note you meet in the steam is chemistry, and it is the reason this rhizome smells the way it does.
- And the newest thread is the nervous system. A 2024 review in Nutrients collected the early work on this rhizome’s activity in nerve tissue — a direction researchers have only recently begun to map. Every study in it is a cell or animal study. There are no human trials here, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is simply the most interesting question currently open about a very old herb.
