Description
Kalarchikai Powder — Caesalpinia bonducella | Fever, Metabolic & Women’s Wellness
Along the field-edges and coastal scrub of Tamil Nadu grows a thorny, scrambling shrub whose hard grey seeds are so smooth and round that children once used them as marbles. But to the Siddha physician, the pale kernel inside each seed — Kalarchikai — is one of the most dependable bitter medicines in the cabinet. Its English name says it plainly: the Fever Nut.
Our Kalarchikai Powder is milled from the white seed kernel alone — cracked from its hard shell and carefully separated — sourced from Tamil Nadu and processed at our facility in Pollachi, so you get the pure, potent heart of the seed.
What Siddha & Ayurveda Say
In Siddha, Kalarchikai is a classic suram (fever) remedy, especially valued for vittu vittu varum suram — the intermittent, recurring fevers — and used for digestive complaints and worms; it is documented in the Siddha Materia Medica. In Ayurveda the seed is Latakaranja, bitter and warming, balancing Kapha and Vata, and traditionally taken (often with pepper) for jwara (fever), agnimandya (weak digestion), and krimi (intestinal worms). Both traditions have long used it in women’s health — to regularise the menstrual cycle and support reproductive wellness — a use now widely associated with PCOS. The seed’s power lives in its bitterness: a deepana–pachana seed that kindles digestion while cooling the fevered body.
What Modern Research Shows
The Fever Nut is one of the more thoroughly studied seeds in the traditional pharmacopoeia. Its kernel is rich in triterpenoids, flavonoids, glycosides (notably bonducin), saponins, and amino acids, and reviews document antipyretic (fever-reducing), antiperiodic, antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antidiarrhoeal, and antioxidant activities — a striking scientific echo of its classical fever and digestive uses. Its blood-sugar action has drawn particular interest, with studies reporting that the seed helps lower elevated glucose. More recently, the herb has been reviewed as a promising natural source of compounds for managing polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) by addressing inflammation and hormonal imbalance, giving modern shape to its long traditional use in women’s wellness.
