The Four Karisalai of Siddha: Why Flower Colour Changed the Prescription
Ask for karisalankanni at a shop in Tamil Nadu and you will almost certainly be handed one thing: a dark-green powder milled from a small, sprawling plant with tiny white flowers. It is a fine herb, and it deserves its reputation.
But it is one of four.
Siddha’s materia medica does not treat karisalai as a single entity. It sorts the plant into varieties by the colour of its flowers, and — this is the part that tends to surprise people — it assigns them different work. The nigandu verses that catalogue Tamil medicinal plants list karisalai the way a wine list distinguishes grapes: same family, meaningfully different character, chosen deliberately rather than interchangeably.
Most of that distinction has quietly collapsed in the modern market, because three of the four are difficult to source and one is easy to cultivate. Here is what got lost.
Why Siddha Sorts Plants by Colour at All
Before this becomes a botany lesson, the logic is worth understanding, because it is not arbitrary.
Classical Tamil medicine organises the material world through a small set of qualities — suvai (taste), veeryam (potency), pirivu (post-digestive effect), and gunam (character). Colour was read as a visible index of these otherwise invisible properties, and colour prefixes run right through the Siddha plant vocabulary: karum (black), vellai (white), manjal (yellow), sivappu or sen (red), nila (blue), pon (golden).
Modern phytochemistry has in many cases quietly vindicated this. Pigment compounds are not merely decorative; they are metabolically active, and their presence often tracks with other compound families in the same plant. The old physicians were reading a real signal, in a different vocabulary.
The Four
The standard enumeration comes down to us through K. S. Murugesa Mudaliar’s Gunapadam (vegetable section, 1936), the modern reference work of Siddha materia medica. In 1991, two botanists at Bharathidasan University — S. Balu and G. R. Rao — set out to establish what plants those four names actually referred to. Their paper in Ancient Science of Life remains the clearest account available.
Vellai Karisalanganni — the white
Eclipta prostrata (L.) L., synonyms E. alba and E. erecta. Family Asteraceae. Small white ray-florets around a yellow disc, borne on a sprawling annual that turns up in damp waste ground across Tamil Nadu after rain.
This is the one you know. In Sanskrit it is Bhringaraj, usually glossed as “ruler of the hair,” and it carries the classical prescriptions for palitya (premature greying) and kesha vardhana (hair growth). It is also a well-regarded liver herb and by an enormous margin the best-researched of the four.
Manjal Karisalanganni — the yellow
Wedelia calendulacea Less., now more properly Sphagneticola calendulacea (L.) Pruski, and also catalogued as Wedelia chinensis. Family Asteraceae — same family, different genus. Entirely golden florets, thicker and glossier leaves, a creeping perennial rather than an annual, and a preference for genuinely wet ground: tank beds, irrigation channels, the flooded borders of paddy land.
In Sanskrit it is Peeta Bhringaraj and in Hindi Pila Bhangra — peeta and pila both simply meaning yellow. Its traditional emphasis shifts: where the white karisalai leads with hair, the yellow leads with kalleeral, the liver, along with the blood and the skin.
This is not a distinction invented for marketing. The Siddha Formulary of India lists the classical preparation Karisalai Karpam Chooranam, sourced to the Bogar 7000, with both vellai karisalai (Eclipta prostrata) and manjal karisalai (Wedelia calendulacea) among its seven ingredients, in equal measure. The formulation treats them as two different drugs, because that is what they are.
Nila Karisalanganni — the blue
Caesulia axillaris Roxb. Family Asteraceae again, genus number three. Blue florets, alternate lanceolate leaves rather than the opposite leaves of the other two, and a chromosome count of 2n = 18 against Eclipta‘s 22 and Wedelia‘s 50.
It is the least used of the four and the least studied. Almost nothing sold commercially as karisalai is this plant.
Sivappu Karisalanganni — the red
Here the trail goes cold, and honesty is more useful than confidence.
Balu and Rao looked for the red karisalai and reported plainly that neither its botanical identity nor a herbarium specimen could be found. The name is in the classical literature. The plant is not in the herbaria.
If a vendor sells you sivappu karisalai with total assurance and no explanation, treat that assurance as a warning sign rather than a credential.
What About the “Black” Karisalai?
You will see karum karisalai — black karisalai — sold and discussed constantly, often as the most potent variety. It is worth knowing what it actually is.
There is no black-flowered karisalai. What people mean is Eclipta prostrata with a dark purplish stem, and Balu’s doctoral work established that the dark colour is anthocyanin pigment produced in response to direct sunlight. It is the same plant as the white variety. A karisalai grown in open sun goes dark; the same plant in shade stays green.
So “black karisalai” is a growing condition, not a variety. Whether the sun-exposed plant is meaningfully more potent is a reasonable question that nobody has properly answered — but it is not a fourth species, and the four in the classical enumeration are white, yellow, blue and red.
The related confusion in the north is worth noting too: Ayurveda has applied the name Bhringaraj to at least three plants — Eclipta prostrata, Wedelia calendulacea, and Heliotropium brevifolium, the last from an entirely different family. Sanskrit sources distinguish them as Bhangra, Pila Bhangra and Safed Bhangra, but the usage is inconsistent across texts.
How to Tell Them Apart in the Field
After the monsoon, in Tamil Nadu, you will come across these. What to look at, in order:
- The florets. White with a yellow centre: Eclipta, vellai karisalai. Entirely golden: Wedelia, manjal karisalai. Blue: Caesulia, nila karisalai.
- The leaves. Eclipta and Wedelia both have opposite leaves with toothed margins — but Eclipta‘s are thin, narrow and roughly hairy while Wedelia‘s are thicker and glossier. Caesulia has alternate leaves, which settles it immediately.
- The habit. Eclipta is an erect or prostrate annual. Wedelia is a procumbent perennial that creeps and roots as it goes.
- The ground. Eclipta tolerates merely damp soil and appears in waste ground and garden edges. Wedelia wants genuinely wet feet.
- The seed, for the botanically inclined. Eclipta achenes are triquetrous with three or four small scales at the top; Wedelia achenes are laterally compressed with two.
- The stem colour tells you nothing about species — only about how much sun the plant has had.
A Fair Counter-Argument
Balu and Rao’s own conclusion cuts against the varietal tradition. Having identified the four, they argued that since Eclipta prostrata does not itself produce flowers of different colours, the names Bhringaraja and Karisalanganni should be restricted in the Indian pharmacopoeia to E. prostrata alone — and that grouping four unrelated plants under one name is precisely the sort of nomenclatural drift that causes practitioners to procure the wrong herb.
That is a serious position and worth stating alongside the tradition rather than hiding. The counter-view is that the Siddha texts were never claiming these were varieties of a single species in the Linnaean sense; they were grouping plants by shared use and habitat, and prescribing between them deliberately — as the Karisalai Karpam formulation, which calls for two of them by name, demonstrates.
Either way, the practical lesson is the same: know which plant is in the pouch.
Does the Distinction Still Matter?
For most people, most of the time: the white karisalai — the common Eclipta — is the right choice. It is the best-studied, the most available, and the most versatile, and there is nothing wrong with using it as your default.
The distinction starts to matter when you are being specific. If your interest is the liver rather than the hair, the tradition points you towards the yellow. If you are following a kayakalpa course — the 48-day mandalam cycles of classical Siddha rejuvenation — the older protocols often rotate varieties rather than staying with one.
And it matters commercially, in a less pleasant way. Because three of the four are hard to source, “karisalankanni” on a label very often means Eclipta prostrata regardless of what the front of the pack implies. If you are paying for the yellow, you are entitled to ask which species is in the pouch, and to expect a Latin binomial in reply.

We do not stock nila or sivappu karisalai. The blue is barely used; the red has no confirmed botanical identity at all. We would rather sell you nothing than sell you a guess.
