Description
What is it
There is an old riddle folded into the Sanskrit name. Ayurveda called this seed Kapikachu — “the monkey’s itch” — and Atmagupta, “the self-guarded,” because the velvet bean protects its treasure fiercely: its pods are sheathed in fine hairs that sting and itch at a touch. Inside, though, lies one of the most prized seeds of the classical pharmacopoeia — a Rasayana long valued as a nervine, a herb for a steady, settled nervous system. Tamil knows it as Poonaikkali. The old healers never used the seed raw; they purified it first. We do the same — dehulling and gently roasting the seeds into a smooth, earthy, caffeine-free brew. The guarded treasure, poured into a cup.
What Makes This Different
- Purified the old way. Classical practice never used the velvet bean raw — it was cleaned and prepared first (shodhana). We honour that: the seeds are dehulled to remove the irritating outer layer and reduce natural anti-nutrients, for a gentler cup.
- Gently roasted, not boiled. A light roast — not a hard boil — draws out a smooth, nutty, earthy flavour while keeping the seed’s natural character, including its natural L-DOPA, intact.
- Whole seed, nothing added. Pure purified velvet bean — no flavourings, no fillers, no extracts. Naturally caffeine-free and tannin-free.
- Clean and careful. Prepared in an FSSAI-licensed, GMP-compliant kitchen in Tamil Nadu — simple, clean, and grounded in tradition.
What It Does
- A classical nervine. Ayurveda has long valued Kapikachu as a Rasayana and a nervine — a seed traditionally taken to steady and settle the nervous system.
- Traditionally calming and clarifying. Poonaikkali has held a place in traditional approaches to a calm, clear, focused mind — gentle rather than stimulating.
- A natural source of L-DOPA. The velvet bean is nature’s richest natural source of L-DOPA, the compound the body uses to form dopamine — the reason this humble seed has drawn such lasting scientific interest.
- A caffeine-free “coffee” of tradition. Roasted velvet bean has long been brewed as a warm, earthy, caffeine-free alternative to coffee — a gentle cup, no jitters, no caffeine.
- The purification is the point. Few teas are defined by how carefully the raw material is prepared. Here it’s the whole craft — the difference between a fierce wild seed and a smooth daily cup.
