Along every field-boundary and roadside in Tamil Nadu grows a tall, quadrangular herb with spiky, backward-pointing flowers that catch on clothing as you pass — which is exactly why one of its English names is “Devil’s Horsewhip.” Yet the Siddhars saw past the bristles. They called it Nayuruvi and counted it among their most dependable medicines, praising it — in some traditions as Amirtha Keerai, the nectar leaf — for its power over the body’s waters, its clearing of the chest, and its old, everyday role as a tooth and gum cleanser.

Our Nayuruvi Powder is milled from the carefully cleaned, dried whole plant, sourced from Tamil Nadu and processed at our facility in Pollachi.

What Siddha & Ayurveda Say

In Siddha, Nayuruvi is a classic herb of the urinary system — the root decoction traditionally taken to promote urine flow and help break down and pass kidney and bladder stones — and the root itself was famously used as a natural toothbrush and tooth powder, valued for keeping teeth clean, bright, and free of odour. It was also turned to for cough, asthma, and joint complaints. In Ayurveda the plant is Apamarga, described as an excellent mutrala (diuretic) useful in ashmari (urinary stones), mutrakrichra (painful urination), and water retention; it is also classically adhmanahara (relieving bloating) and used in respiratory and inflammatory conditions. Both traditions regard every part — root, seed, leaf, and flower — as medicinal, and both regard it as a potent herb best used with care.
