What is it
In Tamil Nadu the murungai tree stands beside the kitchen door, and very little of it goes unused. The leaves — murungai keerai — go into the week’s cooking. The pods thicken the sambar. And for a few short weeks each season the tree covers itself in small cream-white flowers, murungai poo, gathered by hand and folded into rasam while they are still fresh.
Ayurveda knows the tree as Shigru, and also as Shobhanjana — a name usually read as the tree that lends splendour. The Bhavaprakasha Nighantu places it in the Guduchyadi Varga and describes it as light, pungent and deepana, a kindler of the digestive fire. Siddha physicians of the Tamil country worked the same way the classical nighantus did: leaf, flower, bark and seed treated as four distinct materials, each with its own character.
This capsule holds two of those four. Whole moringa leaf and whole moringa flower, shade-dried and finely ground, in a vegetarian shell.
The capsule exists for a plain reason. Moringa leaf is grassy and faintly bitter, and the traditional ways of taking it all soften that — cooked into a keerai, spiced into a rasam, sweetened into a tea. Taken plainly, day after day, most people stop. A capsule asks nothing of your palate and nothing of your morning.
What Makes This Different
Leaf and flower — two profiles, one capsule. Almost every moringa capsule on the shelf is leaf alone. The flower has a short season, a small yield and a hand harvest, and it is far easier to leave out than to gather. We gather it, because the two parts do not duplicate each other: analysed separately, the leaf leads on total phenolics and carotenoids, the flower on flavonoids and radical-scavenging activity.
Whole herb, not an extract. What is inside is the ground plant itself — leaf and flower, nothing concentrated, nothing standardised, nothing stripped away. Extracts have their place, but they are a selection; this is the whole material as the tradition used it.
Single ingredient, and that is the entire list. No fillers, no binders, no flow agents, no rice powder bulking out the fill, no maltodextrin. Moringa leaf, moringa flower, vegetarian shell.
Shade-dried not heat-blasted. Dried out of direct sun at low temperature, which holds the colour and is gentler on the heat-sensitive compounds that make moringa worth taking at all.
Leaf from the tree, not from a by-product stream. Moringa is grown at scale for seed oil and for pods, and leaf is often what is left over. Ours is grown and picked as leaf.

What It Does
- The classical texts put it close to the digestive fire. The Bhavaprakasha Nighantu describes Shigru as light and deepana, a kindler of appetite and digestion, and South Indian kitchens have long treated both leaf and flower as everyday food rather than occasional medicine. A capsule taken with the midday meal sits squarely in that tradition.
- The leaf and flower pairing is measurable, not decorative. A 2017 Indian analysis examined moringa leaf, flower and bark as separate extracts and found them genuinely different: the leaf carried the highest total phenolics along with β-carotene and lycopene, while the flower carried the highest total flavonoid content and the strongest DPPH radical-scavenging activity of the three. A second study comparing the edible parts, again as separate extracts, ranked the flower first for total phenolic content and overall antioxidant capacity, with the leaf next. Both are laboratory analyses of prepared extracts rather than of ground whole herb — but they are the reason this is a leaf-and-flower capsule rather than a leaf capsule with a floral name.
- In people, the leaf has moved antioxidant markers. In a small randomised crossover study of healthy adult volunteers, plasma antioxidant capacity rose within thirty minutes of a moringa leaf preparation, while a marker of lipid peroxidation moved downward across the following hour and a half. The honest limits: twenty participants, a single acute dose, and a prepared leaf extract rather than whole-herb powder.
- Steady rather than stimulating. Moringa carries no caffeine, so there is no lift and no crash to it — nothing borrowed against the afternoon. This is a herb for the long, unremarkable middle of a routine rather than for a moment of effort, which is precisely how the tradition used it: daily food, not occasional rescue.
- The emerging angle — what your gut does with it may matter more than what it is. In a 2025 cell-culture study, an aqueous moringa leaf preparation was incubated with common intestinal bacteria. Bifidobacterium longum grew on it and, in doing so, raised the quantity of measurable soluble polyphenols. Early in-vitro work, several steps removed from a person — but it hints that some of moringa’s interest lies in what happens after it is swallowed rather than in the plant alone. And separately, in cultured immune cells, a moringa flower extract lowered the output of several inflammatory signalling markers. Also in vitro, also early — but notable, since almost all moringa research to date has been leaf research and the flower has been an afterthought.
How to Take It
Two capsules daily, with water.
Traditional use places moringa with food rather than apart from it — it was a keerai and a rasam long before it was a supplement — so with or just after a meal suits it best. Many people take both with the midday meal; others split them across the day. Either works.
Being caffeine-free, it carries no timing constraint and no reason to avoid the evening.
Think of it as part of a daily routine rather than something to complete. Moringa was an everyday food in the households that knew it best, and it rewards the same steady, unhurried habit.
Store the bottle sealed, away from light, heat and moisture.
