Few plants carry a name as bold as this one. In Ayurveda, the heart-leaved climbing vine Tinospora cordifolia is called Amrita — the nectar of immortality — and Guduchi, “the one that protects the whole body.” In Siddha, the same vine is Seendhil Kodi, valued for centuries across Tamil Nadu. It is also known as Chinnobhava, the plant that grows back even from a severed stem — a resilience the ancient physicians read as a signature of its life-giving power.

For generations, Siddha and Ayurvedic practitioners have prescribed the dried, powdered stem of Giloy as a premier tonic for immunity, the liver, and recovery from fever. What Siddha & Ayurveda Say

In Siddha, Seendhil Kodi is documented in the classical materia medica Gunapadam Mooligai Vaguppu (Murugesa Mudaliyar) and is classically indicated for kaamaalai (jaundice and liver disorders), vittu vittu varum kaaichchal and naatpatta kaaichchal (intermittent and chronic fevers), and sarvamegam (metabolic and urinary disorders). Siddha describes the stem as bitter, blood-enriching, and stimulating to bile secretion — the basis of its long use in liver care — and the Siddha formulation Seenthil Chooranam is referenced in the classical text Agasthiyar Paripuranam-400 for its hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) action. In Ayurveda, the herb is Guduchi — a foremost rasayana and vyadhikshamatva vardhaka (promoter of the body’s resistance to disease), described as jwarahara (relieving fever), deepana (kindling digestion), and rare among bitter herbs as tridoshahara, balancing all three doshas while building rather than depleting the body.

Giloy’s traditional standing has drawn substantial scientific attention. A review in the International Journal of Ayurveda Research (Upadhyay et al., 2010) documented immunomodulatory, antipyretic, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities, validating many classical claims through experimental and clinical study. Its bioactive profile — alkaloids, diterpenoid lactones, glycosides, steroids, and immune-active polysaccharides — is detailed in a review in Natural Product Communications (Singh & Chaudhuri, 2017). Research describes its polysaccharides and alkaloids as modulating immune-cell activity, including macrophage function, while its antioxidant phenolics have been studied specifically for hepatoprotective effects consistent with the Siddha use in liver and jaundice conditions.
