Price range: $12.50 through $26.50

Mukurattai Powder (Punarnava / Boerhavia diffusa) — the great rejuvenating herb whose Sanskrit name means “that which renews the body.” Freshly milled from the whole plant, it has been trusted for centuries in Siddha and Ayurveda for the kidneys, the liver, and the body’s fluid balance.

How to Use

Stir half to one teaspoon into a glass of warm water, once or twice daily, ideally before meals. The traditional way is to simmer it briefly into a light decoction. It pairs well with a little honey. Being a herb that works by gentle, steady rejuvenation, consistent daily use over several weeks is recommended. If you have any health concern, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use.

Description

Mukurattai Powder — Boerhavia diffusa | Kidney, Liver & Fluid Balance

You could walk past it a hundred times — a low, sprawling plant with thin reddish stems and tiny pink flowers, scrambling across the edges of Tamil Nadu’s fields. Yet this modest “weed” carries one of the most evocative names in all of Indian medicine: Punarnava, “that which renews the body.” In Tamil it is Mukurattai, and for centuries the Siddha and Ayurvedic traditions have turned to it as a quiet, steady rejuvenator of the body’s inner waters — the kidneys, the liver, and the balance of fluid itself.

Our Mukurattai Powder is milled from the carefully cleaned, dried whole plant, sourced from Tamil Nadu and processed at our facility in Pollachi.

What Siddha & Ayurveda Say

In Siddha and Tamil tradition, Mukurattai is a valued kayakalpa herb — one that promotes long life and vitality — used for the kidneys, the liver, swellings, and to keep the body light and free of excess fluid. In Ayurveda it is Punarnava, and its classical standing is remarkable: the Charaka Samhita records it for mutra vishodhana (purification of the urinary system), praising its warming potency to invigorate the kidneys; the Sushruta Samhita recommends the root decoction for shotha (dropsy and oedema), noted for relieving water retention gently; and the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu honours it as a rasayana that restores fluid balance and strengthens the tissues. It is aptly also called Shothaghni — “the destroyer of swelling.”

What Modern Research Shows

Modern study has given scientific shape to this long tradition. Reviews identify the plant’s characteristic compounds — the boeravinones and the alkaloid punarnavine — and document diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) activities that echo its classical uses for the kidneys, the liver, and fluid balance. Research describes its gentle diuretic action as supporting healthy urine flow while being tissue-toning rather than depleting, and ethnomedicinal reviews (Das et al., 2023) confirm its standing as a kidney, heart, and liver stimulant. The whole plant is also noted as a natural source of vitamin C and minerals, contributing to its rejuvenating reputation.
