Vilvam Leaf Powder — Aegle marmelos | Digestive Support, Blood Sugar Balance

The Vilvam tree holds a unique position in South Indian culture — it is simultaneously one of the most sacred trees in Hindu tradition, offered to Lord Shiva at temples across Tamil Nadu, and one of the most versatile medicinal plants in the Siddha pharmacopoeia. The trifoliate Vilvam leaf — three leaflets joined at a single stem — has been described in classical texts as having properties spanning the digestive, metabolic, and respiratory systems, making it one of the few herbs with documented traditional use across such a comprehensive range of conditions.

Our Vilvam Leaf Powder is milled from carefully selected dried leaves of Aegle marmelos, sourced from Tamil Nadu and processed at our GMP-certified facility in Pollachi. The powder retains the distinctive slightly bitter, aromatic character of the fresh leaf.

What the Ancient Texts Say

The Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana 4) includes Bilva among the Dashamoola — the ten roots of classical Ayurvedic formulation — considered foundational to Indian herbal medicine. The Ashtanga Hridayam (Sutrasthana 6) prescribes it as a primary digestive herb, particularly for diarrhoea, dysentery, and irritable bowel conditions. The Siddha text Gunapadam (Mooligai Vaguppu) classifies Vilvam as having kashaya (astringent) and tikta (bitter) tastes with cooling properties, indicated for vata and kapha disorders of the digestive and respiratory systems. The Bhavaprakasha Nighantu specifically mentions its antidiabetic properties, recommending the leaf decoction for madhumegam (diabetes).

What Modern Research Shows

A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2000) demonstrated significant antidiabetic activity in Aegle marmelos leaf extracts, with documented reduction in blood glucose levels and improvement in insulin sensitivity in animal models. Research in Food and Chemical Toxicology confirmed potent antioxidant activity attributed to the plant’s flavonoid and alkaloid content. A study in the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine documented antimicrobial activity against enteric pathogens — providing a mechanistic basis for its traditional use in diarrhoea and dysentery. Research published in Phytomedicine found anti-inflammatory and antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties. A study in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition confirmed significant hepatoprotective activity.
