Athimaduram – Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has been used in food and as medicine for thousands of years. Licorice root has been used in both Eastern and Western medicine to treat a variety of illnesses ranging from the common cold to liver disease. It acts as a demulcent, a soothing, coating agent and as an expectorant.

Athimaduram is also called as Liquorice, Mulaithi or Yashtimadu. Glycyrrhiza is a word derived from the ancient Greek term ‘glykos’, meaning sweet, and ‘rhiza’, meaning root . Glycyrrhiza glabra plays an important part in Ayurveda and Siddha.

Athimaduram is used for various digestive system complaints including stomach ulcers, heartburn, colic, and ongoing inflammation of the lining of the stomach (chronic gastritis)

Athimaduram is also a traditional remedy for sore throat, bronchitis, cough and infections caused by bacteria or viruses.

The roots and rhizomes are the main medicinal parts of licorice, said to have antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and anti-ulcer activity.

It is an important herb for treating hormone-related female problems. It is used as an energy tonic, particularly for the spleen and stomach, and the root is added to many preparations.
